I explored alternatives, and found in radare2 with its GUI Iaito a helpful toolkit for my needs. The user interface is really excellent, mixing the best features of old and new style UX schools. Not so satisfying is the underlying engine: I can accept that segmented x86 is not the main focus of the software, but its extreme instability (crashes, corruption of the project state and other miscellaneous bugs) was unexpected. As much as I want to revive the spirit of the early DOS era, I do not need to recall its worse sides.
